What is a good readability score for SEO?

For most web content, aim for a Flesch Reading Ease score between 60–70, which corresponds to a Grade 8–9 reading level. This is the sweet spot — accessible to a wide audience without feeling dumbed down. Blog posts for general audiences should score 60+. Technical content for experts can go lower. Anything below 30 is academic-level and will lose most web readers quickly.

Why readability matters for SEO

Google's Helpful Content guidelines emphasise content that's genuinely useful to readers. Content that's hard to read has poor dwell time — readers leave quickly, which signals low quality. Short sentences, active voice, and common vocabulary all improve readability and engagement simultaneously.
