What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a proposed standard (similar to robots.txt) that allows website owners to provide AI language models with a structured overview of their site's content. While robots.txt tells search engine crawlers which pages to index, llms.txt tells AI tools what your site is about, what its key pages are, and how it would prefer to be cited. Placing a llms.txt file at the root of your domain (yoursite.com/llms.txt) makes it easier for AI tools to accurately represent and cite your content.
Does llms.txt guarantee AI citations?
No — but it helps. AI tools that respect the llms.txt standard (including Perplexity and several others as of 2026) use the file to improve the accuracy of how they describe your site.
